For two and for couples

Date night games at home: four ready-made evenings for two

A good at-home date night built around games has a plan: a warm-up game that gets you laughing, a main game with a bit of rivalry or a real conversation, and something slow to end on. Below are four ready-made evenings of 75 to 90 minutes each, a tournament night, a talking night, a silly night and a night with another couple, with the games, the order, the timings and what you need for each.

Most lists of at-home date ideas stop at “play a game”. The hard part is the evening around it: which game, for how long, and what comes next so the night does not drift back to the couch and a screen. The four plans below solve that. Each one takes 75 to 90 minutes, costs nothing beyond dinner, and works on a weeknight.

Why games at all? Doing something new and a little challenging together seems to matter. In a series of experiments published in 2000, couples who spent seven minutes on a new, slightly demanding task together reported a larger rise in relationship quality than couples given a routine task. A game is the easiest new thing you can do at home.

The four plans at a glance

Plan Mood Warm-up Main game To end
Tournament night Competitive Tic tac toe, best of five Four in a row and dots and boxes tournament Rematch of the closest game
Talking night Close This or that Truth or dare, mild then bold Highs and lows
Silly night Light Hum it Draw and guess with a score The story game
Double date Social Two truths and a lie Charades or forbidden word, couple against couple Imposter

Plan 1: tournament night

Warm-up, 15 minutes. Best of five at tic tac toe. It is nearly always a draw between two adults, which is the joke: whoever wins one game gets to choose dinner.

Main game, 45 minutes. Alternate four in a row and dots and boxes: three games of each, a point per win, a tiebreaker if needed. Write the score on paper where you can both see it. Read the strategy guides for four in a row and dots and boxes beforehand only if you want an unfair advantage.

To end, 15 minutes. Replay the closest game of the night, slowly, and talk through where it turned.

What you need: one phone, paper and a pen. A small stake helps: the loser plans the next date night.

Plan 2: talking night

Warm-up, 15 minutes. This or that: one of you asks two choices (“Big city or small town?”, “Early bird or night owl?”) and you both answer at the same moment. Stop on any answer that does not match and ask why.

Main game, 45 minutes. Truth or dare, starting mild. Agree that either of you can pass any card without explaining. After about ten cards, if you both want to, move to the bold ones:

Bolder questions for the talking night

From the bold truths in the free truth or dare deck in the app. Bold means more personal, never adult.

  1. Who was your first crush? Truth, bold
  2. What is your most embarrassing moment ever? Truth, bold
  3. Have you ever accidentally called a teacher Mom or Dad? Truth, bold
  4. What do you think people say about you behind your back? Truth, bold
  5. What is the last thing that made you really jealous? Truth, bold
  6. What is the most embarrassing thing a parent has said in front of your friends? Truth, bold
  7. Have you ever ghosted someone? Truth, bold
  8. Who here do you text the most? Truth, bold

Ground rules, heat levels and more cards are in our guide to truth or dare for couples.

To end, 15 to 30 minutes. Highs and lows: each of you shares the best and the hardest moment of the month, and the other asks one question before saying anything else.

What you need: nothing but this page, or the app on one phone.

Plan 3: silly night

Warm-up, 15 minutes. Hum it: one hums a song with their mouth closed, the other names it. A point for every song named within ten seconds.

Main game, 45 minutes. Draw and guess with a one-minute timer and a running score. Take turns drawing words from our things to draw list; every word guessed is a point for both of you, and you try to beat your score from the first ten minutes.

To end, 15 minutes. The story game: tell one story together, a sentence each, and each sentence must start with the last word of the one before.

What you need: paper and pens, or one phone.

Plan 4: double date

Warm-up, 15 minutes. Two truths and a lie: each person says three things about themselves, one invented, and the others guess the lie. Rules and ideas: two truths and a lie.

Main game, 45 minutes. Couple against couple at charades or forbidden word. You will find out quickly how well you read each other.

To end, 15 minutes. A few rounds of imposter: with four players, one is the imposter who does not know the secret word. Partners are not allowed to vote for each other, which makes it harder than it sounds.

What you need: one phone or a word list, and a table everyone can reach.

Make it feel like a date, not a weeknight

  • Set a start time and treat it like a booking.
  • Put both phones in a drawer, apart from the one you play on.
  • Cook something together between the warm-up and the main game.
  • Keep a season score across date nights; the winner of the month picks a prize.

Questions people ask

What can couples do for date night at home?

Plan the evening around games: a quick warm-up like hum it, a main game such as a four in a row tournament or truth or dare, and a slow game like highs and lows to end. Add dinner you cook together between the warm-up and the main game.

What are good date night games for married couples?

Games that create something new to talk about: the couples quiz, where each of you writes questions about yourself, a draw and guess round with a running score, and truth or dare with personal but not adult questions.

How long should an at-home date night be?

75 to 90 minutes of planned activity is enough. Each plan on this page has a 15-minute warm-up, a 45-minute main game and a 15 to 30-minute slow ending.

What date night games can we play with another couple?

Team games where couples play as teams: charades, forbidden word and draw and guess. Imposter also works with four players on one phone.
