Most truth or dare lists for couples online jump straight to “spicy”. That is one way to play, and not what most couples are looking for on a Tuesday night. The version on this page is the one that leads to the best conversations: personal, sometimes embarrassing, never explicit, with rules that make it safe to be honest.
The rules
- Sit facing each other, or call each other with video on.
- One of you asks: “Truth or dare?” The other picks.
- Truth: answer the question honestly, in a full sentence. “I don’t know” does not count; pass instead.
- Dare: do the task now. Dares here are small: a voice, a story, a text, a compliment.
- Swap. Keep going for as long as you both enjoy it, usually 20 to 40 minutes.
Ground rules to agree on first
These take one minute and make the whole game better.
- Free passes. Each of you can pass any card, any time, and the other does not ask why. Some couples give each player three passes and make a fourth pass cost a dare.
- No using answers later. Nothing said in the game comes up in an argument afterwards.
- Truth means truth. If you would rather not answer honestly, pass. Do not make something up.
- Same level. You both play at the same heat level, and you go up only when you both say so.
Heat levels
| Level | What it is | Example truth | Example dare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mild | Light, funny, about the past and small habits | Which of my friends did you like least at first? | Do your best impression of me ordering food |
| Bold | More honest: feelings, small secrets, the future | What is something you worry about but rarely say? | Tell me three things you would keep the same if we started over |
| Your own | Cards you write for each other | Anything you both agreed to | Anything you both agreed to |
Play mild for the first ten cards even if you plan to go bolder. It warms up the conversation.

Write your own cards
The best couples cards are the ones only the two of you could answer. Before you play, each write five truths and five dares on slips of paper, fold them, and mix them into the game. Some prompts that help:
- A place you went together that you would go back to tomorrow.
- A habit of the other person that you secretly like.
- A small thing the other person did that you never thanked them for.
- Something you want to try together in the next twelve months.
Playing when you are apart
Truth or dare works over a call, and over text if you are patient. Choose dares that travel: “send a photo of the view from where you are”, “record a ten-second voice note of a song that reminds you of me”, “change your phone background to a photo of us until tomorrow”. For more ideas, read our guide to games to play over text or a video call.
Mix it with a real game
If talking for an hour sounds like a lot, alternate: play a quick round of four in a row, and the loser takes a truth. It keeps the pace up, and a little rivalry makes the questions easier to ask.
More ideas for two: games to play with your boyfriend or girlfriend and date night games at home.
